Whitsundays Wildlife in March: What You Can Expect to See

By OzSail Whitsundays

The Whitsundays are a paradise for marine life lovers, and March is an exceptional time to experience the vibrant underwater world in full swing. With warm waters, excellent visibility, and fewer crowds, this month offers a unique opportunity to witness some of the most spectacular marine creatures that call the Great Barrier Reef home. If you’re sailing with OzSail Whitsundays, here’s what you can expect to see:

1. Majestic Sea Turtles 🐢

March is prime time for spotting Green, Hawksbill, and Loggerhead turtles as they gracefully glide through the water. Many of these turtles are still nesting or hatching along the islands, making it a special time to witness nature at its best. Our snorkeling stops often give guests a chance to swim alongside these gentle creatures, an experience you won’t forget.

2. Playful Dolphins 🐬

Dolphins are year-round residents of the Whitsundays, but March is a particularly good time to see them as they become more active in the warm tropical waters. Keep an eye out for pods of bottlenose and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, often seen playing in the wake of our boats or curiously approaching snorkelers. Their playful nature makes for incredible encounters!

3. Elegant Manta Rays 🌊

March is peak manta ray season in the Whitsundays, with these enormous, graceful creatures often spotted near the reefs. With wingspans reaching up to 7 meters, they glide effortlessly through the water, feeding on plankton. Snorkeling near one of these giants is a breathtaking experience, and our crew knows the best spots to find them.

4. Reef Sharks & Other Hidden Gems 🦈🐠

Contrary to popular belief, the small reef sharks found in the Whitsundays—such as blacktip and whitetip reef sharks—are harmless and often seen resting on sandy bottoms or cruising the coral reefs. Other incredible marine life you might spot includes clownfish, Maori wrasse, giant trevally, and even the occasional dugong!
